Shiitake is beneficial in lowering levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.  Eritadenine, a compound found in shiitake lowers LDL cholesterol and accelerate the accumulation of LDL in the liver, where it is converted into HDL cholesterol.

  • May cause temporary diarrhoea and abdominal bloating in high dosages.
  • Allergic reactions are rare, but when they occur, they produce a characteristic whorl, similar to hives (‘shiitake dermatitis), on skin exposed to sunlight.
  • People with bladder cancer should not use raw shiitake.

There is evidence that Reishi can lower both blood pressure and blood-cholesterol levels.  Compounds in Reishi reduce the flow of nerve impulses through the sympathetic nervous system, the portion of the nervous system activated by emotional stress.  Triterpenoids, steroid-like compounds inhibit cholesterol synthesis and allergic response.

  • Adverse reactions are extremely rare, but using reishi for three to six months continuous my result in dryness of the mouth, throat and nasal passages; stomach upset; or nosebleed.  These complications appear so seldom that their exact causes are not known.
  • If taking blood-thinning medications such as warfarin, use Reishi only under a doctor’s supervision.
  • Reishi might have hypotensive activity, so avoid using with antihypertensive medication.

King Oyster

Recent studies show that Pleurotus Ostreatus naturally produce a form of Lovastatin® (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase), a drug approved by the FDA in 1987 for treating excessive blood cholesterol.  Oyster mushroom accelerates plasma turnover of cholesterol, resulting in an overall reduction of cholesterol base lines.

Blood sugar and cholesterol are interconnected.  Maitake is used as a possible treatment for lowering and modulating glucose levels.  Maitake also exerts effects at the genetic level by increasing the activity of the in the liver that promote lipid transport.

  • Maitake might lower blood glucose levels and might have an additive effect when used with other supplements / medication that also lower blood sugar levels.  Monitor blood glucose levels closely.

Terminalia Arjuna

Arjuna’s primary benefit is improvement of the cardiac muscle function and improved pumping activity of the heart.  The flavonoids and oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) it contains help to strengthen the blood vessels and have antioxidant activity.

Arjuna is used as a heart tonic to treat heart failure and oedema.  Arjuna is also reported to lower serum cholesterol and LDL.

Silibinol® is a trademark for a standardized extract obtained from the heartwood and bark of Pterocarpus Marsupium (Indian Kino) useful in maintaining healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

Pterocarpus marsupium is a rich source of key compounds:  Pterostilbene and catechins (-)-epicatechin.

Gugulipid® is a standardized extract prepared from the oleogum resin (gum resin) of Commiphora mukul, an Indian medicinal tree that has been clinically proven to reduce the levels of harmful serum lipids in the bloodstream.  The active ingredients responsible for the maintenance of healthy cholesterol levels are the guggulsterones.

  • Do not use CholestCare if you are on anti-coagulant medication like warfarin.
  • Do not use in conjunction with Diabetic medication as CholestCare might lower blood glucose.
  • Guggul should be used with caution by people who have Chrohn’s disease or IBS.
