Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane is a source of five distinctive polysaccharides with potent anti-tumour properties.  Most importantly is the Nerve Growth Stimulant (NGS) factor – compounds known as erinacines.  These compounds stimulate neurons to re-grow, a feat of great significance in possible treatment for senility and Alzheimer’s disease, repairing neurological trauma, increasing cognitive abilities and perhaps improving muscle/motor response pathways.

NGF plays an essential role in the differentiation and survival of several nerve cell populations in the central and peripheral nervous system.  Lower than normal levels of NGF have been shown to be linked to early stages of both Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Although the focus has mainly been on its importance for neurological function, NGF has a much wider role in maintaining homoeostasis in the body. It is known to have insulinotropic, angiogenic, and antioxidant properties and reduced plasma levels of NGF have been associated with cardiovascular diseases and metabolic syndromes, including type 2 diabetes.  It has been shown to accelerate wound healing.

ADVERSE REACTIONS / INTERACTIONS:

  • If itchy skin occurs, this may be related to an increase in Nerve Growth factor and unless accompanied by signs of allergy should be benign.

Bacopin ®

Bacopin is a standardized extract prepared from the leaves of Bacopa Monniera plant.  It is standardizes for a minimum of 20% bacoside A & B, the active ingredients beneficial in the support of cognitive functions.

Brahmi has been used by Ayurvedic medical practitioners in India for almost 3000 years. The earliest chronicled mention is in the Ayurvedic treatise, the Charaka Samhita (100 A.D.), in which Brahmi is recommended in formulations for the management of a range of mental conditions including anxiety, poor cognition and lack of concentration. According to the Charaka, Brahmi acts as an effective brain tonic that boosts one's capabilities to think and reason. The Sushruta Samhita 6 (200 A.D.) attributes the plant with efficacy in maintaining acuity of intellect and memory. The Bhavprakasha Nighantu, commonly known as the Indian Materia Medica (1500 A.D.), cites the plant as a brain tonic that is effective in maintaining vigor and intellect. In India, Brahmi is currently recognized as being effective in the treatment of mental illness and epilepsy.

Pharmacologically, it is understood that Brahmi has an unusual combination of constituents that are beneficial in mental inefficiency and illnesses and useful in the management of convulsive disorders like epilepsy. Bacosides, Brahmi's active principles responsible for improving memory related functions, are attributed with the capability to enhance the efficiency of transmission of nerve impulses, thereby strengthening memory and cognition.

Laboratory studies indicate that that brahmi improves intellectual function by balancing the chemicals gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate in the brain.  The two main active ingredients have been shown to increase protein kinase activity and new protein synthesis in regions of the brain associated with long-term memory.

In ADD, Brahmi has the additional benefit of minimizing the production of inflammatory chemicals that interfere with circulation in the brain.  It helps to reduce the restlessness and distraction that nervousness causes.

Centellin ®

Centellin® is a standardized extract containing 8% total triterpenes.

Gotu Kola is effective as a restorative tonic for mental decline in old age.  The herb protects the blood vessels supplying oxygen to the brain.  Gotu Kola also improves memory and concentration.

Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo increases cerebral blood flow, and therefore oxygen and glucose utilization and energy production.  Ginkgo offers significant protection against the side effects of ageing.  Furthermore Ginkgo’s antiaggregatory effect of the platelets offers additional protection against a stroke.

Boswellin ®

Boswellin® is a standardized extract containing 70% boswellic acids.

Boswellia is commonly used for treating inflammation (it acts as an NF-KappaB inhibitor), it is neuro-protective and reduces anxiety.

Boswellia can be in the treatment of traumatic brain injuries as it decreases the brain swelling and inhibits hippocampal neurodegeneration.  Some studies have shown benefit for treating secondary brain tumours.

L-Theanine

L-theanine is an amino acid that occurs naturally in green tea (Camellia sinensis) and has been shown to possess anti-stress, anti-depressant, neuro-protective, and cognitive performance enhancing properties.  Theanine has been shown to increase brain alpha waves, which are characteristic of a relaxed but attentive mental state.  The effect of l-theanine on alpha brain wave activity indicates enhanced attention and mental focus.

Adverse Reactions / Interactions:

  • Women with conditions of excess oestrogen production (or taking birth control or oestrogen replacement therapy), should avoid taking Bacopa, since an interaction between oestrogen and increased GABA can cause temporary hearing loss.
  • Avoid using MemoryCare when pregnant or nursing.
  • Do not use in conjunction with Diabetes medication or cholesterol medication (Gotu kola interferes with oral medication for diabetes and may raise cholesterol levels).
  • Avoid using if you take blood-thinning medications.
