Technical information:

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)

Common Names:  Shiitake, Xiang Gu, Black Forest Mushroom

Medicinal Properties:

  • Immuno-modulating (Increases natural killer (NK) cell action and interferon)
  • Anti-viral
  • Liver fortifying
  • Cholesterol reducing
  • Immuno stimulating
  • Anti-bacterial

Shiitake produces Lentinan – a high molecular-weight polysaccharide.  Lentinan has no direct cytotoxic properties, but helps to activate a host mediated response.

Macrophages respond to lentinan – in turn stimulating lymphocytes and other immune cell defences.

Shiitake extract enhances the production of normal white blood cells, leading to phagocytosis.

Shiitake has also been suggested for the treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and as an overall tonic.

ADVERSE REACTIONS / INTERACTIONS:

  • May cause temporary diarrhoea and abdominal bloating in high dosages.
  • Allergic reactions are rare, but when they occur, they produce a characteristic whorl, similar to hives (‘shiitake dermatitis), on skin exposed to sunlight.
  • People with bladder cancer should not use raw shiitake.

Cordyceps (Cordyceps Sinensis)

Common names:  Caterpillar Fungus, Tochukaso, Dong Chong Xia Cao

Parasitizing the larvae of the caterpillar from a Lepidoptera moth, the mushroom is native to Tibet.

Medicinal Properties:

  • Antitumor activity and immune stimulant.
  • Studies have independently confirmed that Cordyceps Sinensis substantially inhibits the proliferation of human leukaemia cells.  The anti-leukemic activity is targeted towards TdT+ cells and is enhanced in the presence of an adenosine deaminase inhibitor which showed that cordycepin was specifically cytotoxic against the same type of leukemia cells.
  • Cholesterol reducing and general cardio tonic properties.
  • Cordyceps increase blood flow under stress.  The increased blood flow would benefit muscles pushed to their maximum, this enhancing endurance.  Training for endurance sports
  • Helps to improve sexual dysfunction
  • Antioxidant properties
  • Antiviral (efficacious treatment for Lyme disease).
  • Relaxes bronchial passages - treatment for asthma and lung inflammation.
  • Protects kidneys.

ADVERSE REACTIONS / INTERACTIONS:

  • Do not use if on anticoagulant drugs, asthma inhalers, or immunosuppressant drugs for lupus, myasthenia gravis, psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. (Cordyceps stimulates the immune system).
  • Avoid using cordyceps for hormone-sensitive disorders such as breast cancer or prostate cancer.
  • Cordyceps are for the use of adults only.

Reishi (Ganoderma Lucidum)

Common Names:  Reishi, Ling Zhi, or Ling Chi, Varnished Conk

Medicinal Properties

  • Immune enhancing
  • Anti-viral
  • Cholesterol reducing
  • Protects the liver
  • Anti-oxidant and free radical scavenger
  • Helps respiration
  • Treatment of HIV (prevents death of lymphocytes infected with HIV and inhibited the replication of the virus within the mother and daughter cells.
  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Triterpenoids are steroid-like compounds that inhibit cholesterol synthesis, allergenic response and histamines – have been detected in extract of Reishi.

The primary anti-tumour effects of Reishi are from biological response modification of the host.  The polysaccharides cause a 5-29-fold increase in the tumour necrosis factors, interleukin-1 & 6 and a substantial augmentation of T-lymphocytes.

Constituents from the fruit bodies have shown to be anti-inflammatory in the treatment of arthritis, inflammation in the brain and prostate.

ADVERSE REACTIONS / INTERACTIONS:

  • Adverse reactions are extremely rare, but using reishi for three to six months continuous my result in dryness of the mouth, throat and nasal passages; stomach upset; or nosebleed.  These complications appear so seldom that their exact causes are not known.
  • If taking blood-thinning medications such as warfarin, use Reishi only under a doctor’s supervision.
  • Reishi might have hypotensive activity, so avoid using with antihypertensive medication.

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)

Common Names:  Turkey Tail, Yun Zhi, Kawaratake

Medicinal Properties

  • Immune enhancement
  • Anti-tumour
  • Anti-viral and anti-bacterial
  • Anti-oxidant

Turkey tail or Coriolus contains several polysaccharides, including polysaccharide peptide (PSP) and polysaccharide krestin (PSK), shown to have anti-tumour and immunomodulating effects.  PSP may have activity against lung cancers, leukemia and gastric cancers.

ADVERSE REACTIONS

  • None known

Maitake (Grifola frondosa)

Common Names:  Maitake, Kumotake (Cloud Mushroom), Mushikusa Hen-of-the-woods.
