S.P.F Skin Pro-Factors Veg Caps

This supplement is specially formulated to aid in the maintenance of healthy skin, especially during the summer months.

  • GliSODin – GliSODin is a patented form of SOD (superoxide dismutase) also known as ‘the enzyme of life’.   This form of SOD is derived from French cantaloupe melon, being a rich and valuable source of this potent antioxidant.  To provide effective transport and delivery of SOD through the GI tract, this form of SOD is combined with a wheat gliadin polymer which protects the SOD from being broken down and destroyed.  SOD, along with catalase and glutathione peroxidase, form the front line of the body’s antioxidant enzyme defences.  The superoxide anion is the starting point of the cascade of reactions of free radical production.  SOD levels decrease with age, while a cell’s susceptibility to oxidants increases, putting the cells under increasing oxidative stress.  Research reveals that supplementation with GliSODin results in a significant increase in circulating antioxidant levels and significantly lower levels of oxidative-stress induced DNA damage.

Skin Health – supplementation of GliSODin daily can significantly reduce UV damage, particularly in fair-skinned individuals.  Hence this formula is ideally suited to help increase the time in the sun before burning and protect the skin from UV damage.  Supplementation of 250mg GliSODin daily, for two weeks prior to sun exposure appears to build tissue levels suitably to achieve this protective effect.

  • ASTAXANTHINastaxanthin is a potent antioxidant carotenoid derived from the Haematococcus pluvialis algae.  Astaxanthin is closely related to other well-known carotenoids, such as b-carotene, zeaxanthin and lutein, thus they share many of the metabolic and physiological functions attributed to carotenoids.  Astaxanthin can be significantly more effective than beta-carotene and lutein at preventing UV-light photo-oxidation of lipids. Research to date reveals that naturally sourced algal astaxanthin helps protect against UVA -induced DNA alterations – effectively working as an ‘internal sunscreen’.

  • GRAPE SEED EXTRACT – OPCs protect against free-radical damage, suggested to be a major cause of the ageing process.  The antioxidant effect is 50 times greater than that of vitamin C and E.  A major advantage of these molecules is that they are taken up into the cell membranes and protect against both water- and fat soluble free-radicals.  OPCs effectively protect collagen structures in several ways.  They reinforce the collagen matrix of connective tissue, protect against free radical damage, and inhibit collagen damage caused by inflammation and infection.   OPCs have been shown to be effective in cases of psoriasis and the hyper-pigmentation disorder melasma (chloasma).  Extensive research suggests that grape seed extract is beneficial in many areas of health because of its antioxidant effect to bond with collagen, promoting youthful skin, cell health, elasticity, and flexibility. Other studies have shown that proanthocyanidins help to protect the body from sun damage, to improve vision, to improve flexibility in joints, arteries, and body tissues such as the heart, and to improve blood circulation by strengthening capillaries, arteries, and veins.

  • BETA CAROTENE (Natural Source D. Salina Algae) – Research inGermany has confirmed that the ingestion of beta-carotene can offer some protection against sunburn, and the longer the supplementation period the greater the protection. Previous studies have suggested that lutein, lycopene and superoxide dismutase (SOD) may improve skin health. There has also been growing evidence that beta-carotene may protect against skin damage from sunlight, but its effectiveness has been difficult to demonstrate. Therefore Wolfgang Kopcke and colleagues fromMunster University Hospital,Munster,Germany, conducted a meta-analysis of seven studies which looked at the effect of human supplementation with beta-carotene on sunburn. The systemic photoprotection by beta-carotene is quite different from that achieved with a topically applied sunscreen. It is stressed that beta-carotene is not a replacement for sunscreen, particularly under strong sun exposure, but may work in addition to topical products. Beta-carotene's sun protection factor (SPF) was about four. The mechanism of action for beta-carotene's sun protective effect is not understood. However Kopcke and colleagues hypothesised that the carotenoid's antioxidant activity may have been responsible. When exposed to ultra-violet B (UV-B) radiation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced in the skin that may result in oxidative stress. Beta-carotene's antioxidant properties may neutralise these reactive oxygen species, thereby offering skin protection. Alternatively beta-carotene may interfere with various signalling pathways that result from UV-B exposure.
