The Cherry Nigh powder contains the following:

Glycine - The amino acid glycine functions as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system via the glycine receptor.2 Two clinical studies have investigated the effects of glycine in people with difficulty sleeping and daytime fatigue. Glycine taken before bed (3 grams) has been shown to improve objective measures of sleep quality with evidence of a more stable sleep state and reduced time to sleep onset and slow wave sleep. Glycine also improved sleep satisfaction, reduced daytime sleepiness and improved cognitive function.3

 

Importantly, glycine does not induce drowsiness or daytime fatigue; on the contrary glycine reduces the sleepiness and fatigue caused by lack of sleep.5

Magnesium - Magnesium deficiency is very common and has been shown to result in low levels of the hormone melatonin, which may impair sleep.6 Magnesium deficiency has also been correlated with increased nervous excitability and poor sleep quality.7

 Human clinical studies have found positive effects of magnesium on sleep. Treatment with magnesium has been shown to improve sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) activity towards a more relaxed state and reduce nighttime production of the stress hormones adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) and cortisol.8 9

 A clinical study of magnesium was performed in older age people, who tend to be more commonly magnesium deficient and have a higher prevalence of insomnia. The study participants took 250 mg of magnesium twice daily or placebo for 8 weeks. At the end of the study those receiving magnesium had statistically significant increases in sleep time, sleep efficiency and concentration of melatonin. Magnesium also significantly reduced insomnia severity, the time to fall asleep and serum cortisol.10

Red date (Ziziphus Jujuba) has a long history of use for its relaxing effect to help calm the nerves and mind and is still the most popular traditional Chinese medicine for insomnia today.11 One of the active constituents, Jujuboside A, has been shown to reduce glutamate- mediated excitatory signalling in the brain, which may in part explain its anti-anxiety and sleep promoting effects.21 In traditional Chinese medicine red date is primarily used for palpitations with anxiety, excessive sweating, insomnia and dream-disturbed sleep.

 Scientific studies support the traditional use of red date for sleep, with experiments showing a mild sedative and sleep enhancing effect.12 In one such report, red date extract improved total sleep time and sleep quality.13 Red date is also an important traditional treatment for anxiety, with evidence to support its anti-anxiety and mild sedative effects.14

 Red date has also been identified as the most important active ingredient in one of the most popular traditional herbal formulas for insomnia.15 The formula, Suanzaorentang, is made of 5 ingredients but predominantly red date. An analysis of 12 clinical studies, mostly  comparing Suanzaorentang to conventional medication (benzodiazepines), generally found Suanzaorentang significantly more effective than medication for treating insomnia.16

 Cherry - Cherries are a rich source of phytochemicals that may have important benefits for the brain and nervous system.17 They are also known to be a natural source of melatonin, a hormone that plays an important role in regulating sleep patterns.18

 A number of clinical studies have suggested that cherries can improve sleep and melatonin levels. For example, consumption of cherry juice for 7-days significantly increased melatonin levels and improved sleep measures including time in bed, total sleep time and sleep efficiency, compared to placebo.19 Another study found that cherry juice consumption over 2-weeks had a modest beneficial effect on sleep in older adults with insomnia with an effect that was equal to or better than other popular natural treatments; valerian and melatonin.20

Dosage

 

Mix one heaped teaspoon into a small amount of water or juice. Drink one hour before bedtime. For stress, anxiety or severe insomnia, take one-teaspoon morning and night.

 

For children 2-6 years take half a teaspoon mixed in water or juice. Best taken one hour before bed. For children 7-12 years take one level teaspoon mixed in water or juice. Best taken one hour before bed.

Not recommended under 2-years unless advised by a health care professional.

 

Contraindications

 

There are no known safety issues or side effects with the ingredients in Cherry Night in clinical studies and historical use, suggesting the ingredients are very well tolerated. Although the formula helps improve sleep it is not a sedative and does not cause daytime fatigue or drowsiness.

 

Due to lack of safety data, this formula is not suitable for use in pregnancy or lactation.

 

Interactions

 

There is a theoretical interaction with sleep medication – use with caution. Possible beneficial interaction as it may improve sleep and reduce reliance on medication.
